In The (Yellow) Spotlight

With the group qualifying rounds of the European championship happening this week, all of the top European leagues were on international break. The lower leagues were still in action however, so for me that put a sole focus on Oxford for the week. As I mentioned in the previous post, the Yellows had a midweek Johnstone’s Paint trophy game but they also had their usual Saturday league game as well.

Oxford fielded a team of some reserve players in the midweek trophy game against Aldershot Town. It’s not a priority tournament, so most teams do. The first half was a wash between both sides, but Oxford came out swinging in the second half with two goals within 10 minutes of retaking the field. The first goal was from on-loan young gun Robert Hall who is sadly only on loan with the team until the beginning of November. (He’s really provided a good up-front spark for the team.) After those two quick second half goals, the Yellows settled in for a relaxed 2-1 win.

Yesterday morning I had an enjoyable time of having just one game to follow. Of course I could only follow on a match tracker, but none the less it was nice not having to jump from match to match. The lads from Oxford did not disappoint either. They continued their fine form over a mid-table Bristol Rovers team with a 3-0 win. Striker James Constable had scored two in the game, with Peter Leven scoring off of a penalty. Goalkeeper Clarke was on fine form getting some great saves (from what I read from the game reports…) and earned a much deserved clean sheet. Oxford United now sit in the league table in the fifth spot, three points back from leaders Southend United.

Next week Oxford plays another mid-table team in Macclesfield Town. More importantly though, many of the other top League Two teams play each other, which hopefully means Oxford can keep progressing upwards. Of course there still is a lot of the season ahead, but capitalizing on a winning form is always a good thing.
